![]() ![]() The fee is paid by the citizens for the citizens in accordance to a solidarity principle. This fee amounts to 17.50 euros per month and is collected for each residence. In Germany, the public service broadcasters for radio, television and Internet are financed by the license fee. The tenth member is the Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster. Today, the ARD consists of nine regional public broadcasting corporations for 16 federal states: Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR), Radio Bremen, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB), Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), Südwestrundfunk (SWR) and Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln (WDR). ARD, ZDF – “the Second” German Television Channel (“Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen”) –, as well as “Deutschlandradio” which is jointly run by both corporations, comprise the public service broadcasters within the Federal Republic of Germany. Collectively, the ARD and its affiliates produce a non-commercial repertoire of programmes that are indispensable to the German media landscape – offering diversity and quality at the local, regional and national levels. The Internet is an integral component of these production activities. This mandate is defined in the statutes of the respective broadcasting corporations and in the Interstate Broadcasting Agreement at national level (“Rundfunkstaatsvertrag”). The mandate of the public broadcasting corporations is to produce information, educational, advisory and entertainment programmes. The ARD produces approximately 250 hours of television viewing and around 1,400 hours of radio listening on a daily basis – supplemented by its productions for online and videotext. Depending on the terminal device in question –hybrid TV, PC, tablet, or smartphone – the digitalised media world allows also the time-delayed and mobile use of all ARD programme services. With its nine autonomous regional public broadcasting corporations, which are state-independent and publicly funded, the ARD offers a diversity of programmes on television, on the radio and online that can be freely received by all. The ARD, that is: the “Association of Public Broadcasting Corporations in the Federal Republic of Germany” (“Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland”).
